We are assembling forces for a mass attack as ordered. The enemy is unaware. We are expecting 2,000,000 men and 6,000 tanks to be ready for assault at Kursk.

“Is this real?” she gasped. “This would be one of the biggest battle forces ever assembled.”

“The very biggest, unless I’m mistaken. This battle has the potential to be decisive in the war. If the Germans triumph, the Soviets will never recover, and the Allies will never gain the foothold in Europe they need to defeat the Nazis. I think your colleagues in Switzerland will be most eager to communicate these numbers to their Moscow allies as soon as possible.”

Monika’s pulse raced as she placed the telegram on the table. But she was determined not to show it. She took a deep breath, trying to be the master of her body. Dulles needed to see these telegrams, but she was trapped. Sarah hadn’t devised a plan to get her out of the country yet.

“Why didn’t you bring these telegrams to the OSS in Switzerland yourself?”

“I can’t leave the country. I only got permission to travel here to meet Hans March because I bribed someone. But as far as this or any more information is concerned, I won’t provide another word until I know my family is safe.”

“Where are they?” she asked.

“In Berlin. And I don’t want them traveling alone. I can’t take them, so if you can’t escort them yourself, someone else will have to. My children are alone since my wife died last year. I won’t make them travel alone.”

Monika didn’t have time to argue with him about details like that. “Are they ready to leave? Getting them out of the country won’t be easy.”

“They’ll do what I tell them to, but there’s a catch.”

“What might that be?”

“It’s my daughter, Elke. She contracted polio when she was a toddler. Her legs have never been quite the same. She has trouble walking long distances.”

“I suppose climbing would be out of the question?”

“If you’re proposing going over the mountains into Switzerland, I’d try to come up with a different plan. Poor Elke would never make it.”

Monika pushed out a breath and sat back in her seat. “So, you’d stay in Berlin and supply us with information even if your family escaped across the border?”

“I’ll remain and do my duty until the time comes to join them. I don’t want to get caught up in the Soviet wave either.”

“Your duty to whom?” she asked.

“To the side that will afford the German people the least amount of harm in the long run. It’s strange to say as they’re bent on invading us, but that’s the Americans and the British. The Soviets will burn our entire country to the ground if they get the chance. Coming to you is my effort to stop them from doing that.”

Monika picked up the telegrams again. “I’ll need to take these with me tonight. I have to get them back across the border as soon as possible.”

“I expected as much.”

“Won’t the German High Command miss them?”

“Once I summarize the telegrams for them, I dispose of them.
